The Women's Group is a feminist group, but each woman by virtue of her own experiences and realities, defines her own feminism and her particular activism. No one of us, alone or in this group, can speak for another woman's experience.
On Sunday mornings at 10:45 a.m., The Women's Group meets in the third floor Sojourner Truth Room (take stairs or elevator) (map) at First Unitarian Church 5210 Fannin at Southmore to share information and resources; define and affirm our feminist inquiries, analyses, and visions; and to enjoy the company of women. We are committed to change through this communication and through the political activism that arises from our ongoing consciousness-raising. We verify our commonalities, benefit from and/or transcend our differences. We are a group for all women. There are no dues.
The 10:45 to 11:00 a.m. time is the linchpin of our feminist activism. We value and celebrate women for their involvement in social and/or political arenas. We also use this time for networking with other organizations within the women's community; announce upcomming social and/or political actions, protests, or events; and create gatherings for social events such as movies, art openings, speakers, and readings, both at the academic and grass-roots level for the current week and month.
Beginning at 11:00 a.m., a speaker or panel of women extends our vision of a safer and more just world for women and children. The range of topics includes empowering women, women's work, aging, unity to stop violence against women by men, racism & internalized/unaware racism, homophobia, why women pay more, feminist backlash, women of color defining feminism, safety in the home and workplace, funding for women's health care, women's spirituality, the philosophy of female friendships, electing women to political positions, and our own financial and emotional empowerment.
We introduce ourselves each Sunday and spend time circulating at the end of the meeting (usually around noon) so that everyone can greet new women. We recognize and support those whose lives are in transition and those who may need encouragement and friendship as they create liberating changes for themselves. During these approximately two hours, in the company of women only, The Women's Group provides the possibility for women to speak and be heard.
After our program, many of us sit and eat together at one of the restaurants in the area. From there, we often go to a movie at 2:30 or 3:00. This is a time when friendships are made and strengthened. We invite you to join us on any Sunday. You will be welcome!
Other Women's Group activities include WAG (Women Against Global Trafficking) - contact Lilian Care at tigermoon1@netzero.net; Book Group meets 3rd Thurs. each month, 6:45 pm at the Montrose Library, 2nd floor conference room.
