Our Women's Group, founded in 1975, is enriched by our continuing historical affirmation and relationship with First Church, and we continue to create innovative community with the simplicity of our welcome shibboleth. Each woman defines her own feminisms based on her unique life experiences and activisms. With intent to reflect the global journeys and voices off all women - we commit our Sunday mornings to their endeavor.
Women's Group continues to meet weekly each Sunday at 10:45 am in the Sojourner Truth room and celebrates the covenant between Women's Group, First Church and community. We celebrated the legendary advocate for justice and human rights activist Frances "Sissy" Farenthold with a city of Houston proclamation for her life contributions. Conversely our Women's Group was selected by Texas N.O.W. as a recipient of the "Inspiring Women" award for our legacy of providing sanctuary for women to network, create community and initiate political activism with our voices, money and votes for more than 25 years. Our founder, Iris Greer Sizemore, and The Women's Group was featured in OutSmart Magazine with First Church highly profiled as our home. Many of our active members are leaders in larger community organizations such as: Jacsun Shah and Lilian Care who are founding members of Voices Breaking Boundaries (V.B.B.) - a forum for bringing collective voices from diverse perspectives; Laura Reich - co-facilitator of Women's Group and representative to First Church Program Council, Women United founding board member, Houston Fire Department Advisory Board member, WG representative to Lesbians United in Coalition (L.U.C.), and affectionately famous as ChzHead005 who administers the WG e-list and website; Lucy Watson - empowering AssistHers, Lesbian Health Initiative (L.H.I.) and Gay & Lesbian Political Caucus by sitting on their respective boards; and attorney Barbara Ashley who announced her candidacy for Houston City Council at Large Position #4.
Women's Group weekly attendance averages 30 to 35 women and we request no money from the budget. We are committed to our annual pledge of $2,500 and to retiring the remaining $300 of our $2,000 capital drive pledge. Our representatives to Program Council are Laura Reich and Lilian Care, both members of First Church.
We value and appreciate the community and relationship between First Church and The Women's Group as we create an environment in which love, respect and support characterizes our possibilities.
